What a difference an OC makes

OK to get this started, I have to tell you why I've decided to write about the OC's Martz and Raye. I read an article that I found to be very interesting. I'll give a link at the end.

Last season, Mark Martz came to the 49ers with the thoughts of turning our offense into something special...

what he brought was his own QB and little concern for what we had already had in place.

He told us that he was going to make Gore the focal point of the offense and that he was going to get the best out of Vernon Davis. Needless to say...none of it happened in my opinion.

Gore had a pretty good season but, I think he could have been a LOT better if his skills were utilized better. As for Vernon, we all saw where Martz's system left him...on the line of scrimmage for the most part as a blocker. Now, if that is what Matrtz meant about bring out the best in Vernon, then I guess he did his job. I was under the impression that Vernon was going to be burning down field and leaving LB's in his dust. As for the QB thing...well that was  complete disaster! More sacks given up then a potato farm. How in the hell can start a THIRD string QB over a Number 1 draft pick? I'm not sure but Martz did it. Well, when Mike Nolan was fired, I thought Martz would change his tune a bit...he did but not willingly. When Mike Singletary took over, things began to look a little more interesting. We DID see Vernon catching balls down field and we also saw a change at QB. Hill came in (due to an injury to Smith) and started making things happen that SHOULD have been happen all season long.

We finished the season on a winning note and I saw an offense that was less pass and little more run. That was the turning point for Martz...or should I say the beginning of the end for Martz. Shortly after the season ended Martz and his high flying passing game were gone.

It took a while but the 49ers found a man that I think is going to make a HUGE difference in how the offense is run.

Enter Jimmy Raye.

Here's a man that is KNOWN for his use of his tight ends and running backs. He's made a Eric Dickerson a well known name in the households of 49ers fans all over. Dickerson used to cause the 49ers fits when we played the Rams. He's also the reason Tony Gonzalez is such a dominate force in the NFL. Now, if he can do that with those two players, what do you think he's going to do with Gore and Davis...that's right make them SHINE! Not only that but, I don't see the 4 and 5 receiver sets that Martz used almost every other down. I see a well balanced offense that defenses are going have to study for before playing the 49ers this year. Last year it was pretty easy to know what to expect from the 49ers...Pass...Pass...and oh yeah....pass. Not this year buddy.

Raye seems to me to be a thinking mans coach and that's what the 49ers needed. I think he's going to bring out not only the best in Gore and Davis but the Hill (should he get the starting job). Hill would benefit from a balanced offense in that he wouldn't have to do the 7 step drops and hope that his receivers can get open in 3 to 5 seconds before he's running for his life. This would be true too for Smith if he's our starter. Smith has had a rough time getting his career off the ground in the NFL and now I think he might able to really get a grasp.

So now the 49ers are going to be a more relaxed offense and not so fast to get the ball down field on the first snap of every game. I see the 49ers making good plays and using everything in our arsenal. Especially our tight ends.

The 49ers are on there way back and it's going to be a totally different looking team and not just because of the uniform change. I like what I've seen and heard about coach Raye and I'm really sorry that I had such high expectations from the run and gun offense that Martz brought.

Slow and on the go V.S. Fast with the pass...hmmmm...think I'll take it easy this season.

Just some thoughts.

Until next time...

See ya at the Stick
