OK, evrybody is talking about our QB issues. I don't really see the problem. Alex Smith is coming of an injury that has not COMPLETELY healed but, he's throwing well at the OTA's.
This shouldn't cause panic for Hill fans. Hill is very much as good a QB as we've seen him be. I read somewhere that some think it might have been a fluke because of the offense that was being used by Martz. I don't care what offense is being run, if you have time to get the ball to your recievers down field, you'll complete 60-70% of your passes.
As for the competition for QB, Hill will get the call because of a few things. The first being the team will have a little more faith in Hill because he performance in the second half of the season last year. Hill took over for JT O'Sullivan and the team starting doing things. You could see that the team began to rally around hill and play with a little more passion and want.
That's not to say that they wouldn't have for Smith if he were available to play. The coaching change had a LOT to do with it as well. Players seemed to me to WANT to play hard for then interm coach Singletary. His heart felt love for winning started rubbing off almost immediately. His decision to bench JT and bring in Hill was bound to happen. And Hill took full advantage of the opportunity.
If it had been Smith to come in (if he were healthy) I know that it would have been the same way. The players would have got behind him and played with the same intensity. So to say that Smith doesn't have a chance is not true...he does. But, will the players feel comfortable with him at the helm knowing that he's still not 100%? I'd like to say yes but, in the back of my mind, I don't think so. I think it would be in the best interest of the team to go with Hill as far as he can take us. And IF he begins to perform poorly obviously we bring in Smith. Until then, I see Hill being the starting QB for the 49ers this year and I see him taking it the whole season barring any injuries. So it's just a matter of time before we hear the news that Hill is named the starter for the 2009 season. If not, I'll still be happy to see Smith out there running the offense. Just as long as he plays with heart and desire that everyone else will be playing with.
