Mike Singletary

19 October 2009

The Texans run defense has been suspect all season, and as you may well be aware, Mike Singletary is an "Old-School"-run-the-ball-play-tough-defense kind of coach. The 49ers will hopefully be welcoming back Frank Gore (he has been looking good in practice all week) who will be chomping at the bit to get the ball. Look for the 49ers to pound the ball early to get Gore going, and then use him to stretch the defense with screens and dump-offs, eventually leading to some playaction passes. The Texans have the weapons to put up some points, so it will up to Nate Clements to lock down Andre Johnson, and Patrick Willis to supply decent pressure.

ed TE Vernon Davis was benched.

However, throughout all of this turmoil, the 49ers rallied around Mike Singletary and played their hearts out for the final 5 weeks of the season, winning 4 of 5.  Our inconsistent owners decided to keep

st positive that this game is going to be a statement game against the Redskins for 2 reasons:

1) Mike Singletary can either finish the season 4-5 or 5-4. This would make a huge difference. At 4-5, he looks like just another interim head coach who is destined for mediocrity. At 5-4 however, he looks like a quality head coach who can bring a much needed change to a dying 49ers organization.

me to early, which was a surprise, since Thomas Jones has been lighting it up this year.  Give Mike Singletary credit for keeping the 49ers focused.  Having a coaching change in mid-season is not an easy task for a team, but Singletary is making a case for having the interim tag removed from his title!

It stunk, I dunno. One highlight I can truly say was watching Mike Singletary take over as coach of the San Francisco 49ers. It did my heart good to see an old school Gridiron great out there coaching the old school way. Say what you will, I loved it.

vering!  Let’s go Phillies!  The parade down Broad Street is within reach!

Mike Singletary called out TE Vernon Davis on the sideline.  He then sent him to the showers while the game was still going on.  He later blasted him in the post-game press conference.  I don’t know how good or bad Singletary will be as a head coach in the NFL…but I guess we all know who is in charge!

uard?

The San Francisco 49ers fired Mike Nolan this week and have replaced him with Mike Singletary (Assistant Head Coach).  Mike Nolan is one of a few coaches who wears a suit on the sideline…he does this as a tribute to his father, Dick Nolan.  The elder Nolan was an NFL player for 9 seasons, an assistant coach under Tom Landry for 6 seasons, head coach of the 49ers from 1968-1975, and head coach of the New Orleans Saints from 1978-1980.  He passed away on November 11, 2007 in Texas.  It was nice to see someone honor the tradition of the game and his father at the same time.  I’m not a fan of seeing coaches in cut-off sweatshirts on the sideline (and yes, that was a shot at Beli-cheat)!

In June, a Bulldog started off as an underdog and over the course of 3 weeks became a Wonderdog.  Is it any surprise that a former Bulldog led the Rays to their first World Series appearance, in Bob Gibson like performance.
