Red Zone Ranger: week 3 NFL
This week in the pros it seems like there is a subtle changing of the guard going on in the power structure of the teams. Is Buffalo finally for real this time? They've done this before in years gone by where they come out fast and turn some heads, but usually by week five they start to unravel like a cheap suit. Injuries or lack of staying power, or something. But this year they did look impressive against two playoff teams from last year. If they blow out the Raiders this week, maybe I'll look for a comfortable place on the bandwagon to plant myself. And are the Broncos riding 'high' again? Cutler looks like he has a cannon for an arm and he knows how to use it. They have historically been known as an offensive powerhouse but unless they can find that genuine old skool 'orange crush' their defense will once again prove to be their achilles heel.
And the Pats. The way Brady was held out during the preseason I remember thinking that the
Pats are going to be just a slightly better than average team without him, and the other teams would be salivating at the thought of playing them this year. I'm still not sure if that's the case, their defense has stepped it up and made me a loser in the Jets game, but the Jets were their own worst enemy in the way they chose to pretend they were the Titans with their playcalling.
With a QB like Favre, what the heLL was Mangini thinking? If that hump continues to hamstring Brett like that the Jets are in for a long season. We'll see how Casell holds up against
the NFL A-listers. And another team that killed my bottom line was those Jaguars. What the
#$@%?! is going on with you guys? I know your offensive line is hurt, but you're digging yourself into a hole I seriously doubt you will be able to excavate yourselves from.
The saving grace of this season for me is that I finally think the Niners have a real offense this
year. It's amazing to me how a journeyman like O'Sullivan could all of a sudden look like a reincarnation of John Brodie. (Hopefully without the crucial red zone picks). With a respectable defense,(although still lacking a credible pass rush), I think the Niners have a good shot of sniffing the playoffs this year. Yes, this year!
Okay, so I admit. I'm a Niners fan so my objectivity is questionable. But I think that the Niners will make it a point to blow out the Lions this week. (Martz will pray for this). If this comes to pass then I know I'm on the right track. If Kitna somehow finds a way to beat us, then I'll just purchase a nightguard to minimize the negative consequences of my nightly teeth grinding.
And finally I give full props to Aaron Rodgers, the man most hated by the average cheesehead in the early fall of this year. But in every game he has played he has looked solid. But he did play against a tentative Viking team that was strong but had a QB that could not pull the trigger.
And then they played a Lion team that you really can't say was a real test. Sure they made the Pack work late into the game, but true to form they went into that late in the game self destruct
mode QB Kitna has developed and perfected in his long storied NFL career. So the jury is still out on Mr. Rodgers. But so far he has looked like a strong addition as a long term leader of the Pack(ers). We will know much more about these teams by Monday. I can hardly wait. Game on!
