DIRECTV NFL Sunday Ticket and the San Francisco 49ers

Thanks to DIRECTV I was able to catch every 49ers game last season. I have found that the only way to keep tabs on the team fomr hundreds of miles away were to subscribe to both the DIRECTV NFL Sunday Ticket and get Sirius radio for my travels (you can choose the home or away audio feed on Sirius). Thanks to technology, I feel as connected to the team as when I lived there.

There’s no need to pretend that you don’t still care about these NFL legends just because their record of 5-11 in 2007 was a disaster. Look on to the bright new season with its share of trades and stellar draft picks. Head coach Mike Nolan is back though he will be clearing the desk of offensive coordinator Jim Hostler and welcoming the talents of Mike Martz and Scot McCloughan. The team has also suffered some losses including quarterback Trent Dilfer, linebacker Derek Smith and Bryant Young, only the latter of which retired. This was in addition to free agency players like Marques Douglas, Kwame Harris and Maurice Hicks.

The team hoped that the 2008 NFL Draft would help bring the 49ers back to form. The team only had six picks overall so tried to choose as cautiously as possible. Did they succeed? Defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer was chosen first, though he wasn’t exactly the standout playmaker fans were hoping for. Nevertheless, the most observant of NFL experts can’t deny that the 49ers have suffered in recent years because of their defense. Chilo Rachal was the second choice and has a good size and athletic build for game play. Though seen as a bit of a raw talent, expect him to fill some holes this season and help out the 49ers in a time of need. Josh Morgan was a more controversial choice though his talents are hard to deny.

All in all, the draft left San Francisco fans wanting more, but with an overall feeling of contentment. (Especially given the limited number of picks) The most recent news coming from the 49ers is the signing of offensive tackle Barry Sims. He had previously been with the Oakland Raiders since 1999, but was recently released earlier this year. Does this spell some hope for the 49ers in the new season?
